Virtually the entire state of Kentucky was hammered by snow and ice over the last two days. The storm left over 500,000 people without power for what may be up to 10 days. In the Louisville area, over 100,000 do not have electricity tonight. Jefferson County schools have been called off for the rest of the week and most surrounding counties are expected to do the same.
Our power was restored early this afternoon and I was able to venture out to get a few pictures and see how Bullitt County held up. I-65 and most main roads were fairly clear, but virtually every side road was covered to some degree.
Major roads were cleared by Wednesday afternoon.
But, even highly travelled secondary roads were still slick.
Many trees were bent over...
and a lot simply broke.
This one did a little of both and blocked the road.
Anyone who thinks schools will reopen this week is delusional. (Freedom Elementary)
While everything looks peaceful..
there are still many things to worry about.

Erik...
This is photo-journalism at its finest. Thanks for sharing, it feels like I was there.

Richard - Thanks for the kind words and the feature. BTW, these pics were taken with the new Nikon D40X that I purchased on your rec. Thanks for that as well!
It makes for some great pictures, but I bet it makes for some difficult travel as well.
Erik it looks like you guys got it pretty good. Our winter here in MASS has been brutal so far. I am looking forward to warmer weather for sure!
We had that storm here right before Christmas. I still have a pile of broken limbs in my yard that need to get recycled.
Erik - What great pictures these are. I find that I am complimenting your pictures more and more. Are you sure you have not taken a class or something? Snow always looks great, from a distance.
JL - Tuesday was brutal. It took me about 90 minutes to go 15 miles. Wednesday wasn't too bad as long as you stayed on the main streets. I'm just grateful that we have power. Many don't and we are supposed to get hit again on Monday.
Bill - I generally like the snow, but now that we've had some, I'm done for the year. Bring on Spring!
Melina - Do they not sell matches in Oregon??
John - Lol - Digital cameras can make anyone a good photographer. Just keep pushing the button and then sort though until you find one that came out well.
Makes me shiver with fright remembering our last ice storm...it is no fun being without electricity for 12 hours...Beautiful Shots, Erik!
Shawn Davis
I hope you are not one of those waiting for electricity to be restored, Erik! Beautiful pics, but they are making me cold from all the way down here. Stay warm, my friend!
Shawn - I figured you Michigan people would consider this child's play :)
Lisa - Never fear Lisa. I've got a warm house, cold drink and Active Rain.
Erik: Looks like you had much more of this than we had here on the state line.
I heard tonight on the news that Tennessee has 10 EMS crews heading to Kentucky to offer assistance and relief
Roland - We still have many areas around Louisville that are not accessible and I know several people who have been without power since Tuesday. I imagine that more rural areas are worse off. TN, IN, and Ohio have sent EMS and electrical teams to KY. We certainly apppreciate all the help we can get.
Dear Erik,
Beautiful photos! Even though it was beautiful, the damage and hardship a storm like this can create is not a happy feeling!
Thanks for sharing.
Barbara
Barbara - You are so right. Last night's news ran a story about a fire started due to a candle that was being used as a light source for a family without power. I'll spare you the details, but it was tragic.
Whoa!!!!! Talk about snow bunny eye candy! Oh my word... what awesome shots. That first one would make a Spanking-A poster!
